Food insecurity as a result of flooding threatens the majority populations of the Gambela region.
The repeated overflowing of four main Rivers; Openo (Baro), Gilo, Akobo and Alworo makes it difficult for the majority Agrarian society living along these Rivers.
Our approach to this sector is to empower indigenous populations by enhancing their capacity to improve their long term access to food security and income generating activities which will enable them to rely on local resources without much dependency on external and national support.
The combination of strategies that targets food availability through income generating activities is a way that could sustain the communities’ activities, in particular the predominant agricultural sector that has remained underdeveloped since 1980 as a result of abundant food aid and the presence of refugees from across the international border.
ASO intends to engage the local populations in developing long term sustainable agricultural practices through phase by phase approach as radical change from dependency would be expensive and unnecessary in the long run relationship with groups, individuals and communities.
